The third world is notorious for its urban stray dog populations. Zambia is no different. Stories of children pitting dogs against each other in the compounds for entertainment, rabies running rampant within a community, and stories of veterinarians being ordered to commit euthanasia on innocent dogs are often heard. Driving around the city of Lusaka we habitually find ourselves slamming on the breaks to dodge strays that run frenzied through the streets searching for food and shelter. Aid and relief for stray dogs is difficult to come by unless households are willing to take dogs in and provide for them. Thus, to do our, part we adopted Kamba.

Meet Kamba. Kamba means “speak” in Nyanja, the local Zambian vernacular, and as she grows so does her voice. She is a Rottweiler/Labrador cross which leads to a mixture of two distinct and strong personalities. While a playful retriever she has the strength and will of a Rottweiler. She is quickly approaching her six-month birthday and growing rapidly.

Our hearts and consciences would not let us give up Kamba and thus we have committed to keeping her at our house. All of us work for a non-profit organization that does HIV/AIDS education and prevention program and are located in Lusaka, Zambia for the year on unpaid, voluntary internships. Many of us will be staying longer than the year long period allotted and thus have ensured Kamba a safe and stable home for the years to come. We are looking for individuals who would be willing to sponsor Kamba. Whether you are able to give a $20.00 donation or a year-long sponsorship we would greatly appreciate any support that can be given to keep Kamba healthy and fed. If you feel that you cannot assist Kamba at this time please pass this note on to your friends or family members.
